Tips on Power Outage Preparedness

Well before hurricane season arrives it is important to implement a power outage preparedness strategy. This includes a plan that should span for at least two weeks. One never knows when, where and how severe the next hurricane will be and what effects it is going to have on your power supply.

Preparing for a power outage

You will want to devise a survival plan without power. You first need to consider the necessities. Start by making a list.

Water:

As part of your power outage safety kit, you should plan for one gallon of water per day per person. It may be that you cannot access your tap water or it is not safe to drink and you will have to boil it. This means you are going to need an alternate source of power to be able to boil the water so plan for this. An alternative is to always keep a two week supply of bottled water on hand.

Food:

Your best source of food will be canned items. You will need a heating source for some of these which cannot be eaten cold. These are quick to heat up and this is why you want to rely on them to conserve your cooking source. Ideally if you have a generator, then you will at least have some limited cooking access as it can provide power to your microwave for example. Another alternative is prepare gas to power an outdoor grill.

Heat:

Power outage preparedness also includes planning for the time of year that an outage may occur. If it is in the winter months, depending on your location, heat may be an issue. A portable heater and a generator will be your two best friends in this instance. Also, make sure you have ready access to warm clothes and blankets.

Sanitation:

When preparing for a power outage you have to plan for proper sanitation. You will need extra water for flushing the toilet. If you are forewarned that a severe storm is coming, fill the bathtub with water to maintain the toilet. Or if its winter you can always bring snow in for this if it is available.

Your power outage safety kit contains all of the items we have talked about but you will also need extra items like flashlights, and extra batteries, as well as candles. Make sure you have extra medications on hand and a first aid kit. Have some means of communication for being able to hear updates and notifying friends and family of your situation.
